This latest model mimics updates to the flagship F1 & F1-X models, now featuring shorter head-tube, 20mm! shorter chain-stays (for better climbing ability), a more vertical seat-tube and raised BB shell. Just like the pure-bread racing F1 hardtail, the head-angle & fork rake have bee relaxed, increasing the front-centre for greater high speed stability.
In a day and age of mass production composite frames at questionably low prices, its refreshing to find a high-end, high-performance alloy model that proves the adage “its far better to invest in the best alloy chassis, than the least expensive carbon one”.
Olympia are masters of hydroforming, a process where high-pressure fluid is forced through each tube, expanding the metal into moulds that control shape, diameter and wall-thickness. The Drake features a fully hydroformed tube set, most notably the flared and ovalised top-tube, down-tube and tapered 1 1’8” to 1 ½” head-tube.
Each Drake frame starts with lengths of raw tubing, individually formed, cut, mitred, drilled, jigged, welded, aligned, sanded, primed, painted and polished by time served craftsmen at the top of their game. Only a lack of expensive mould tooling and costly materials separate the highest quality carbon from the highest quality alloy frames.
